The WeHelp Mindset is what I call a foundational mindset. What this means is it becomes the foundation upon which your other mindsets rest.
As soon as I redefined mindset as habits of thought, feeling, and behavior, the idea of the foundational mindset became obvious. Habits go through four stages (PARC): Prompt, Action, Response, Correction. Your most powerful mindsets are foundational mindsets that create a filter for the correction step which guides your habit formation.
What does this mean?
Let's say you decide to become a football player and you have a habit of lying in bed with your phone in the morning. During the correction step of your phone habit the football filter is going to step in saying we need to jump out of bed and get to the gym.
The WeHelp Mindset works similarly except it's filter is much broader: "Is this helpful?"
The absolute magic of WeHelp is that this filter hits you as soon as you hear the words WeHelp. One guy I talked to dismissed the idea of WeHelp saying it wasn't going anywhere. The next day he called me up and told me that as soon as he sat down to watch TV by himself he immediately thought of WeHelp. Wouldn't it be more helpful to spend time with my family?
The reason this happens so easily is that evolution built WeHelp into us.
JK Hamlin did an amazing study finding that pre verbal infants preferred to be around people that they saw helping others. As humans raise infants together as a tribe this is a genetically programmed survival instinct. An instinct that results in humans using helpfulness as a major determinant of the social status of others.
As we got older, we lived and died as a tribe so evolution again stepped in to give us the WeHelp Mindset as a foundational mindset driving our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Anyone who was not actively helping the tribe was dead weight.
Take a second to re-read that last sentence.
Evolution guides our behavior through pleasure or pain. We've all felt pleasure in helping others. What about the pain of NOT helping others? If you are not actively helping the group, evolution needs to kill you off to increase the odds of the group's survival.
WeHelp is a foundational mindset that is built into us AND is required for our mental and physical health.
